THE SACRED POTATO:

Andean Ritual, Ceremony, and Celebration during the Harvest

In the Andean Altiplanes, potatoes are cherished for their unique identity. Each potato tells its unique tale rooted in heritage and tradition. During each harvest, the Aymara Waru Waru communities come together to celebrate the potatoes and make offerings to Pachamama, Mother Earth, in return. They show gratitude by offering sacred gifts like cocoa leaves and wine while praying for fertility and nourishment. The harvest is a ceremony of community, connection, reciprocity, and life.
